Are you planning to start a business with your spouse?
If you own a business already, would you be willing to make it a ‘family affair’ in the future?
If you’ve been thinking about it, or if you’ve already taken the plunge, why not take a few tips from couples who have successfully braved “couplepreneurship?” To help you decide if love and business will work for you, we’ve enlisted ten married entrepreneurs to share their experiences along with ten reasons why you should definitely mix business with pleasure.
1. You can work as a team.
You should definitely start a business with your spouse. Working together as a team in both work and raising our four children makes both our business and marriage stronger.
2. You get to bounce ideas off each other.
Since my wife and I have both owned our own businesses in the past, it made sense to launch one together. It dawned on us to combine our knowledge and create a training company for anyone wanting to start a professional organizing business.
We are always together to bounce ideas off each other. We’re both able to use our strengths to make the company the best it can be. Most importantly, almost every meal we eat together can be counted as a business expense as long as we are mostly talking about business.
3. You will experience the same things.
When starting a business with a spouse, it is essential that you each have different tasks to do and different skill sets. For example, my wife Rose does marketing, and I provide investment advice.
I also think it is helpful if you both have separate offices. Remember, there is no one to let your hair down with at the end of the day because both of you had the same kind of day. A strong marriage is essential because no matter what happens during the day, at the end of the day you will both be under the same roof.
4. You get to spend time together.
My wife and I wanted to work together since we met in college. We have been able to do so most of our working lives. We think of husbands and wives working together as “the graduate school of relationships,” which means we maintain a perspective that you’re a couple and a family first. A great joy is that you get to spend your time with a person you can trust, each bringing different skills and perspectives to the business.
While many couples who lead separate work lives grow apart, we have found we grow closer as we share a common mission. We have found it is important to allow one another to perform his or her own task without interference and never to compete.
5. You share a passion.
It is a great way to enhance an already great marriage because together you have the joy of building something and leaving a legacy in life. It gives you a chance to share a passion that focuses outside of your marriage, but at the same time strengthens it. We work much harder than any employee would because it is our business. It is wonderful to be able to share the ups and downs with the person you love most.
