In 2006, Kira Friedman-Rega and Nate Rega started working together in Kira’s mom’s photography studio. Little did they know that their experience would lead them both to pursue their passion for creative photography and entrepreneurship.

“We were hungry for achievement and were determined not to get “real jobs,” said Kira. “Photography is our passion and we refused to give that up.”

Today the two entrepreneurs own a successful photography studio that serves commercial and corporate organizations and their work has been featured in national magazines including Grazia, Vanity Fair, and Knitscene.

Learn how Kira and Nate launched their professional photography business and why you should stay true to yourself and your vision.

Industry: Photography
Startup Year: 2006
Startup Costs: $20,000

How We Got Started:

For several years Nathan and I worked at my mom’s photography studio in Ventura, California. During that time, we taught ourselves the ins and outs of creative photography, technical lighting, and business development. What we also learned was that photography was much more than capturing an image, but rather creating a connection between ourselves and the client.

We began our entrepreneurial journey in 2006, when we decided to leave California and venture to Fort Collins, Colorado and start a photography studio out of our home. We were hungry for achievement and were determined not to get “real jobs,” because photography is our passion and we refused to give that up.

We started as a small studio focusing on weddings and portraits, and anything else that would give us opportunity, and look past our embarrassing living room studio setup. We do it because we love the creativity and ability to connect with other people on a higher level.

After a couple of years of conviction and confidence we found that people were drawn to our bright, vibrant, quirkily-unique photography. Business started booming!
