As I pressed my index fingers into the side of my skull trying to come up with a scalable solution for my staffing company, Phenomenal Staffing, I was painfully submerged in hopelessness. I drifted back into painful memories of failed business attempts in recent years.

Not only had I not accomplished my childhood dreams of becoming a successful entrepreneur, but my intense focus was leading to the loss of some of my closest family members and friends along the way.

Inevitably, we all fall victim to this process. I like to call it: “The blind man’s tunnel vision.” It happens when we fool ourselves into believing we are traveling on this incredible journey of success, yet we are actually taking enormous steps backwards. We start neglecting the core principles that got us going in the first place.

So, maybe you have fallen victim to this along the way. Could it really be that bad?

Pursuing Financial Freedom

Studies affirm that people who write down their goals on paper are likely to be more successful than those that don’t. For example:

“There was a fascinating study conducted on the 1979 Harvard MBA program where graduate students were asked ‘have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?’

The result, only 3% had written goals and plans, 13% had goals but they weren’t in writing and 84% had no goals at all. Ten years later, the same group was interviewed again and the result was absolutely mind-blowing.

The 13% of the class who had goals, but did not write them down was earning twice the amount of the 84% who had no goals. The 3% who had written goals were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97% of the class combined!”

Picture being in the top 3%. What would you do? How would you act? What would you change, and if so what world crisis would you solve?

These are questions we ask ourselves as we begin our ascent into financial freedom. But it is all too easy to overlook the important step of determining the best course of action when we get stuck trying to figure out things on our own.

Overlooked Success Strategies

Here’s a look at three things highly successful people do, qualities that are often overlooked by the general population:

  1. Ask questions of those who have been in your shoes.

When we start chasing four leaf clovers floating in the wind, we often forget to ask the right questions of those who are playing the game at a higher level. We forget the value of counsel from those that have already been in our shoes.

When I joined the Game Changers Academy after reading Peter Voogd’s book, 6 Months to 6 figures, I didn’t get involved in the community, at first. It wasn’t until later that I realized how invaluable the connections and resources were within the group.

  2. Fail first, or learn from those who have.

Often, you can find the incredible success stories of the world’s leading entrepreneurs in all their glory, but what you won’t have is insight into the continuous failed business plans and the blood sweat and tears behind the process.

Back when I served in the United States Air Force we had supervisors who, at one point in their careers, carried the same status and rank we were currently holding. This in itself was extremely valuable. Soon after leaving the military I realized my staff sergeant was not just my manager, but my mentor as well. If you haven’t reached out for a mentor, I suggest you find one now. It will make all the difference in the world.

  3. Help enough people get what they want.

Have you ever heard that voice in the back of your mind telling you to give back? It often happens after you cash your first check from your coveted first sales. In my opinion, the value you create for others will increase your value.

Warren Cassell, Jr., the author of Swim or Drown and creator of the online course, How to Build a Billion Dollar Rolodex, teaches on this exact principle. As the late Zig Ziglar, author, salesman, and motivational speaker, would say, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”
