Renew Your Mind, Banish Mediocrity And Detox Your Life

Here's a look at 6 practical suggestions to help you move from unconscious mediocrity to conscious empowerment and detox and declutter your life.

Have you ever considered what’s really going on beneath the level of your conscious thought?

“The unconscious is where most of the work of the mind gets done; it’s the repository of automatic skills, the source of intuition and dreams, and an engine of information processing. Fleeting perceptions may register in the unconscious mind long before are aware of them.”

Unconscious mediocrity

Unconscious mediocrity is an adage you may not be familiar with. In fact, you may not want to be familiar with it because it just sounds bad. And if someone we’re to say you are facing unconscious mediocrity, you’d quickly respond: “No way! Not me!”

You probably have your vision board and daily affirmations. Maybe you’ve even taken time to remove those “money blocks” that kept you in a financial rut and held you back from abundance.

Yet, all of this doesn’t mean you aren’t facing a battle with a cloaked enemy. Unconscious mediocrity is just that — unconscious. It’s the deepest part of the human mind, below the conscious and subconscious. “The unconscious mind is the storehouse of all memories and past experiences…” where our “beliefs, habits, and behaviors are formed.” And it is “vast and deep and largely inaccessible to conscious thought, a bit like the dark depths of the ocean.”

Unconscious mediocrity goes so deep that you don’t even know it is happening. In life and business it is that black hole of familiarity.

How did I get here?

Perhaps you think your comfort zone is a great state of being. You have everything planned out, you’re surviving, and you have achieved some success.

But along the way, you’ve picked up a few extra pounds, the dark circles under your eyes seem darker, and your bank account balance is a few digits short. Meanwhile, the vision you imagined for your business has become a dream. It is buried under all of the new information you had to learn to get your business out there.

Me·di·oc·ri·tyˌ mēdēˈäkrədē/ noun: the quality or state of being mediocre; moderate ability or value

Your comfort zone seems comfortable until one day … it isn’t. It is actually a very uncomfortable place to be. It’s a state of being where growth does not happen. You fall victim to other people’s thinking.  And you often lose sight of your own personal value.

You can be doing everything you can as a business owner and still lose (or never discover) your uniqueness (i.e., in marketing, it is called your unique value proposition). It’s what potential ideal clients would pay big bucks for! And instead of becoming a visionary success, you’ve become a second-rate version of your best self as an entrepreneur.

As Chris Guillebeau, author of The Art of Non-Conformity, suggests: “The standard of good has been replaced by good enough, which is a way of justifying the mediocre. When we encounter the good enough standard on a regular basis, we come to accept it as normal.”

Detox and declutter your life

If this seems utterly familiar, it’s time to declutter, detox and renew. Here’s a look at 6 practical suggestions to help you move from unconscious mediocrity to conscious empowerment … detox and declutter your life.

1. Clarify what you want

Take some time to think and write down what you actually want. What is your vision for your business and life? Clarify your own definition of success. Start keeping a journal. Make a list of everything you experience and note how it causes you to feel. If you notice any recurring themes such as anxiety, unhappiness or distraction, remove the things that cause them.

2. Check your surroundings

Look at your daily surroundings and ask yourself, “Do they support me in life and in business?” Your environment broadly encompasses your natural environment, social settings, built environments, learning environments, and informational environments. From everything to your personal space and daily routine, to the type of information you consume, and time spent on Facebook groups. Do your surroundings bring you closer to your vision for you life and business?

3. Make some rules for social media

Facebook is habit forming — literally. “Facebook stimulates the release of loads of dopamine as well as offering an effective cure to loneliness.” Social media, and the time spent on it, can become toxic. So, make some rules for Facebook. Consider how much time you will spend on it, when you’ll scroll your feed and make sure it doesn’t distract from what’s most important — your business.

Does social media make you feel supported and inspired or distracted and confused? Whatever your answer it’s time to unfollow and delete anything that doesn’t serve your vision.

4. Declutter your office

Is your office space messy? Successful people are meticulous about their spaces. It’s how they stay organized. Consider which files do you need to throw away and what files you need to move into the cloud. Research has proven that physical clutter negatively impacts your ability to focus. And mind fog doesn’t help in life or business.

5. Consider your health

Do you feel vibrant and healthy? If not, consider what you’re eating. Those cookies in your pantry and the ice cream in your freezer … trash them. Urgent situations require immediate action.

6. Clean out your closet

Steve Jobs wore the same black sweater (he owned countless black sweaters). In fact, your personal style is a reflection of who you are to the world and to yourself. It is internal positioning. So, if what you’re wearing doesn’t make you feel your best, it’s time to make a big donation to Goodwill. Buh-bye to anything that makes you feel less than amazing!

When you take these small steps you will feel lighter and less overwhelmed. The goal is to be more of who you are, so you can attract abundance in your life and business. It’s time to really claim the visionary success you were born to create.
