American author, Henry David Thoreau observed that most people live lives of quiet desperation. Rick Warren, author of the NY Times Best Seller ‘The Purpose Driven Life,’ better describes it as aimless distraction. He later asserts:
Without a clear purpose, you will keep changing directions, jobs, relationships, churches, or other externals — hoping each change will settle the confusion or fill the emptiness in your heart … but it doesn’t solve your real problem — a lack of focus and purpose.”
The central theme in this excerpt identifies the potency of a focused life; one lived with a distinct purpose. I am continually learning that without the correct thought life your goals and dreams cannot be established and manifest themselves.
We are a direct reflection of what we’ve been thinking lately. This principle applies to every area of your life including business.
So, how can we focus?
- Identify and write down what’s important in your life.
They will fall into 1 of 5 categories (Current, Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Lifetime) - Become cognizant of your strengths and your weaknesses.
- Develop a daily to-do list.
- Make it a priority to consistently complete the daily tasks.
Start small. For example, today’s goal could be to name your new business, design business cards, or start your business plan. Make it realistic and attainable. Start with accomplishing your goals today … no matter how minutia they seem. You will learn how to handle, and not misappropriate today’s dealings, and become more equipped to master larger and greater tasks.
