Passion and drive are infectious. It is an attitude and undying sense of never settling that ultimately becomes your work ethic.

Work ethic is not learned it is experienced.

These experiences are what create our perspectives, and build our path. It isn’t accepting what is given to us, but pushing past expectations and always doing more.

Work ethic is the cure to the entitlement epidemic.

What The Student Learned That Day

But how do we instill this in others, as it cannot simply be taught?

We give of ourselves, lend an ear, and give chances to those who want to work hard, and we let them earn the opportunities along the journey. As a manager I get to inspire and reward work ethic every day and it’s a great privilege.

In Steven R. Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, he asks, “What one thing could you do in your personal and professional life that, if you did on a regular basis, would make a tremendous positive difference in your life?”

I would argue that it isn’t one thing but many little things that are at the core of your work ethic. Do more than asked and then ask for more. Being passionate about what you do and continuing to strive for excellence is the path to personal and professional success. And if you are like me, success isn’t an end point but a journey you must earn through hard work.

So the answer to the young student’s question, “Isn’t there an easier way?”

Yes, sometimes, but with “the easy way” you miss the real feeling of success and accomplishment along the journey.
