Initially I targeted all small business owners that could not employ a full-time bookkeeper. It wasn’t until I was on set for a commercial shoot, that I realized that I could market myself as an accountant that focused on the niche beauty and creative industries. As a model, not only am I always surrounded by these types of professionals and companies, but I love to research and learn about their line of work.

Soon, the proverbial light bulb went off and I became “The Beauty Accountant.”

Best Success Story:

To date, my most memorable success with EmeryCloud is being accepted by Youth Business America’s (YBA) Oakland, California chapter, an organization that assists young entrepreneurs with funding and mentorship.

I approached YBA in June to inquire about startup funding opportunities. Once I was approved by the chapter president, I was given the opportunity to present to a pre-selected panel of bankers in hopes of receiving a small business loan. I presented on Monday, July 30 and was approved for the start-up loan that day!

The whole process was instrumental in helping me better articulate my concept and services.

Once approved, it also served as reassurance that top banking industry executives believed that my business would be successful. Since then, the organization has set me up with a CPA to be my mentor and I have also gained new clients — acting as a financial consultant to another program recipient.

Biggest Startup Challenge:

My biggest challenge was setting myself apart from other accountants and bookkeepers.

As a young professional, I don’t have years of experience and there are a plethora of bookkeepers and accountants in the market. I overcame this barrier by carving out a niche that I enjoy and constructing a brand that my market would respond to.

#1 Tip for Entrepreneurs:

Start a weekly recap journal.

Every week, I set aside 15 minutes to reflect on what I accomplished the week before and any challenges or successes that I encountered. Its a great way to stop and think about what is working for your business and what is not working.
