Your company blog can be the most powerful online marketing tool at your disposal, but only if your ideal customers can find it. With the vast range of tools available today, you can build your company blog, implement simple search engine optimization (SEO) tactics to increase its visibility, drive traffic and generate more leads from it – even on a small budget.

SEO is a great tool to build awareness for your company blog, but it is not a quick fix, flash in the pan. It takes time. Here are few tips, techniques and tools that you can delegate to your internal team or utilize yourself, to get started:

1. Build a company blog on your own domain. 

I love two publishing platforms in particular — WordPress and Blogger. But if you’re really serious about SEO, you should publish your company blog on your own domain. Consider this: when you build your blog on someone else’s domain (e.g. ilovecooking.wordpress.com) you are building their search visibility, not yours. Why go through the hassle of optimizing someone else’s site? Instead, build your own house (e.g. ilovecooking.com/blog) and stop renting from someone else.

2. Develop keyword rich content.

Blogs in general are powerful SEO tools. Developing a company blog can improve your company’s online visibility because every post becomes fresh content — another web page and more opportunity to get found by ideal customers. But before your blog’s pages can be found, you must have the right content that people are actually searching for.

Quick ways to generate “in-demand” content include:

a. Answer customer questions.

Utilize the questions that customers ask frequently to fuel blog content. If a few customers are asking, you can be assured that there are others out there you’ve yet to meet who need the same information.

b. Brainstorm topics using Q&A sites and forums.

Sites like Quora, Yahoo Answers, and other forums are great platforms to help you generate new content ideas for your company blog. These places are where your ideal customers are hanging out, so you should be there as well.

3. Create keyword rich headlines.

Page titles and headlines play a huge role in SEO. Search engines place a high importance on your titles and so do readers. Your title is used to determine if your content is relevant or not. It is what signals to your audience if it’s worth clicking to find out more.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

a. Start with keywords.

The first few words of your title have more weight on search engines, so make sure your keywords are  included.

b. Number your lists.

It doesn’t matter what people say, numbered lists work. They break down content and make it easier for people to digest information quickly. That, in my opinion, can only be a good thing.

4. Use your keywords early in your content.

Your page title (i.e. headline) is important, but it also needs to be supported by relevant content. Utilizing your keyword phrase in the first few sentences of your copy and repeating it several times in your post will signal the relevance of your content to search engines.

Warning! Never stuff content full of keywords. Whilst SEO is important, your company blog is there to create valuable content. Instead, write first with your reader in mind and then optimize your content after for search engines. Your content should flow, and your keywords usage should not appear obvious. If you overuse your keyword phrase it can backfire. Search engines may punish you for “over-optimizing” your post.
