3. Don’t Forget Requisite Building Permits

If you’re unable to find the perfect building to use for your business, you can always renovate an existing structure. There are certain guidelines to follow though. You’ll most likely need to get a building permit; the city requires permits for:

  • New construction
  • Additions to existing structures
  • Alterations of commercial space (altering the use of a space; business office to restaurant, for example)
  • Renovations that need major construction to the facade or interior of the building

So if you find the perfect location for your tiki bar or restaurant, but there’s now an office building in that spot, make sure to research the permit and zoning requirements.

4. Adhere to Legal Requirements

In addition to required building permits, there are several other specific legal specifications you’ll need to adhere to.

One of the very first things you’ll need to do is apply for a business tax receipt through the city. Once you’ve filled out the basic form, you’ll need to pay a tax. The amount of this tax is dependent upon the type and size of your business. For more information on this, contact the county tax collector’s office.

You may also find it helpful to contact the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce to inquire about any other licenses or permits that are required to run the type of business you plan to open. There is also the question of zoning. Consult the city’s zoning restrictions for guidance on areas to avoid.

The Miami Dade Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is also available to help guide you through the process of opening a local business. Utilize these organizations to help guide your decision-making process.

5. Consider Inclement Weather

Generally speaking, the weather in Miami is idealistic. But its geographic location makes it exceptionally vulnerable to hurricanes. Make sure that you keep this in mind as part of your business model. Take the steps to prepare yourself against these natural disasters such as investing in storm windows, and purchasing insurance coverage in case of damage.

Still interested in moving your current business to the magic city? Think it would be a great place to make your long-awaited dream of owning a beach side restaurant a reality? Explore all that Miami has to offer by visiting as a tourist. Talk to local vendors, and other entrepreneurs who share your passion. Analyze your business model and niche to see if Miami is the place for you. There are a lot of key factors to consider, but this list will point you in the right direction toward making an informed decision.
