Why You Should Consider ‘Working From Home’ – In A Hotel

Suffering from 'work from home' fatigue? Cue a ‘workcation’ – the latest travel trend whereby entrepreneurs can work from a hotel or Airbnb.

If you’re suffering from ‘work from home’ fatigue, you’re not alone.

Recent studies show a majority of today’s workforce, 70%, will work from home remotely at least five days per month over the next several years. While 2020 may be considered the year of remote work, it’s no surprise that this is just the beginning as we see the trend continuing in 2021.

According to a Enterprise Technology Research survey, the percentage of workers permanently working from home is expected to double in 2021. Another recent Gartner CFO survey revealed that over two-thirds (74%) plan to permanently shift employees to remote work after the Covid-19 pandemic ends.

As a result, many of us are desperate for a change of scenery. Cue a ‘workcation’ – the latest travel trend whereby entrepreneurs and professionals alike can work from a hotel or Airbnb – either for a single day or weeks at a time. And with many hotels offering exclusive packages and reduced rates, now is a good time for a working vacation.

If you feel uninspired or simply bored of your home office, a ‘workcation’ is a great option to boost productivity and take a much-needed break. By checking into a hotel, you can work in a stylish office or suite and feel as though you’re on a luxury staycation during the evenings and weekends. Here’s why it’s worth considering.

Set some real geographical boundaries

When we’re working from home, it’s tempting to extend our hours to get things done – especially when we save time on a daily commute. This isn’t always good for our mental health. However, a dip in the pool, turndown service, or a Swedish massage after a long day can be.

Working from a hotel helps to set more reasonable boundaries as you look forward to taking advantage of hassle-free amenities. For example, put your email on auto-response around your normal finishing time and note responses will resume the next day from a certain time.

It’s also important to lay down some ground rules at home – particularly if you don’t live alone. But ground rules are often broken, am I right?! A hotel workcation can ensure distractions and interruptions are kept to a minimum – especially during busy periods.

Gain access to the right technology and business laptops

Before you leave home, ensure you have access to the cloud-based software, websites and technology necessary to get things done.

Now is a good time to upgrade your laptop computer. Dell Technologies provides everything the ‘work from home’ workforce needs to securely connect, produce, and collaborate; anywhere at any time. Their business-class laptops are secure, manageable and reliable. Take business on the go with laptops that perform.

Once you get a newer and better laptop, add an extra layer of protection for private or sensitive business data and set up a virtual private network (VPN). To send sensitive information back and forth, encryption is vital.

Switch up your working environment

If you’ve been working from home for months on end, you could probably do with a change of scenery. Hotels around the world are offering a range of packages and discounted rates for those who want to relocate their home office to a luxury room or suite.

Whether you’re after a smart and stylish room in the city, a quiet boutique hotel in the countryside or a luxury villa abroad, there are a range of options. Hotel guests can book a single ‘daycation’ or even opt for a longer ‘work from a hotel’ package to enjoy the luxuries of a hotel for weeks or months at a time.

Once you’ve decided on your hotel of choice, you’ll have access to a range of stylish workspaces. Many hotels have converted rooms or suites into designated offices where you, and colleagues, can work in a socially-distanced manner.

It’s a great option for face-to-face meetings and conference calls where you need a private space and a bit of peace and quiet – opt for a hotel suite with an adjoining office, or rent an entire room. You’ll be able to enjoy high speed Wi-Fi, a stylish work set-up and 24/7 room service.

Contact your favorite hotel and inquire about their seasonal offers. Many hotels offer discounts on their best flexible rates and a full complimentary breakfast each morning. Guests can also negotiate a weekly rate to make use of hotel amenities, or enjoy a private suite for a day.

Enjoy hotel luxuries

If a swim in a hotel pool or a massage at an award-winning spa after a day of back-to-back Zoom calls sounds like your idea of bliss, it’s worth considering the different options.

Some hotels offer guests a dedicated office space, in addition to an apartment suite, with access to a fully-staffed 24-hour reception, and an on-site gym. Similarly, inquire about a range of luxury perks, including a private car service and a bespoke dinner menu.

Get rid of distractions

The productivity metric is proving that remote work is working, but our distractions work harder. The hum of the washing machine, the noisy neighbour, the household chores – whatever your distractions are at home, working in a hotel will get rid of the daily annoyances that come from home life, and will help to boost productivity.

If you’re after some tranquillity, head to the countryside or look for hotels outside of your local city. Airbnbs in charming countryside villages and seaside towns offer monthly discounted rates.
