Submission Standards

YFS Magazine Skip the Line Concierge - Submission StandardsThanks for your interest in becoming a YFS Magazine Business Contributor.

Articles submitted for consideration should be of interest to readers of YFS Magazine. We like articles that introduce new ideas and advance conversations around topics and trends that engage our readers–think op-ed rather than thinly veiled marketing messages with no valuable takeaways.

We appreciate lively, polished writing that balances research or news with fun and memorable anecdotes or examples that help illustrate your point of view.

While we encourage drawing from your own experiences in business to support your ideas, over-the-top self-promotion (of yourself or your company) will prevent us from publishing your article. The same goes for dense jargon and abstract, blanket assertions.

Submissions should be unique, well organized, and of high quality. Anything derivative, too abstract, unclear, meandering, or lacking a clear purpose or take-away will be rejected. Personal takes and opinions are welcome, but diary-like blog posts are not.

Read YFS Magazine to get a sense of our editorial style and content to view examples written in a similar vein. Guest posts should be complete and ready for publishing.

Submission Guidelines & Checklist

Please read this information. It will greatly improve your chances of being accepted.

All guest posts should be:

  • relevant to our readership engaged in startups, small business, and entrepreneurship
  • written in fluent U.S. or British English, well organized, and free of spelling, grammatical, and language issues (we recommend Grammarly)
  • submitted as final copy, we do not accept outlines
  • evidential of cited sources to properly credit original authors when using quotes, data, case studies, statistics, etc. – hyperlinks should be relevant and support the citation
  • original content – plagiarism is strictly impermissible
  • proofread with the assumption that no editing will be necessary
  • free from keyword stuffing; using the same keywords (or phrases) over and over again in your content
  • the correct format (.doc, .docx, .pdf) or formatted for HTML (Html-Cleaner.com) when required
  • in compliance with content, images, and link guidelines

We ask all authors to disclose any business or financial relationships they have with companies cited in the guest post. Failure to do so will result in declined submissions.

For some wise words on the writing process, see “So You Want to Write an Article?” by A List Apart to learn about common pitfalls we see in submissions and how you can avoid them.

Images

YFS Magazine provides a hero image for each article to ensure it represents the style and tone of our publication and for copyright purposes. Occasionally, upon editorial discretion, we will accept third-party press-ready high-resolution hero images for inclusion. Images should be at least 1920×1280 pixels, and owned by you or your client – for copyright considerations. We do not accept images that contain logos, product shots, or screenshots. A photo copyright credit should be included to prevent publishing delays. The hero image is not to be confused with the optional author image.

Link Requirements

For general submissions, a maximum of one (1) permanent Dofollow link and two (2) Nofollow citation links per submission are permitted.

Confirm which link in your article should be assigned the one (1) “Dofollow” HTML attribute. An essential part of SEO strategy, a dofollow link from a reputable site can significantly boost PageRank and help your brand stand out.

The two citation links (i.e., authority links) are used within the content to add more context and link a reader to another source that will add additional and important information to the topic at hand. Authority links cannot link to the Dofollow link domain. Duplicate domain links are prohibited.

Links must be clean (i.e., semantic URLs that are readable) and intuitively represent the underlying resource as well as relevant to the subject matter of the content. An example of a clean URL is yfsmagazine.com/startups/top-startup-tips/. Links cannot be placed in H1, H2, or H3 header tags. Redirects are not permitted. Links deemed promotional and spammy will be deleted.

Max anchor text for all links includes 2–4 English words; non-numeric and contains no special characters (e.g., !#@). It’s best to keep it as succinct as possible. Search engines can view an excess of exact match anchor text negatively.

Contextual Interlinking to Improve SEO

Our editors may add one contextual internal link from existing relevant content on yfsmagazine.com to your article for SEO purposes – a signal to search engines about the relative importance of your content.

Example:

  • Page 1 – yfsmagazine.com/existing-content
  • Page 2 – yfsmagazine.com/your-article

An internal link from Page 1 to Page 2 is considered an internal link – a link between two pages of the same domain. This supportive link is strategically added to boost the performance of your content (Page 2) in search engines and direct valuable link equity to your content. Simply put, internal links can send page authority (i.e., PageRank) to important pages on yfsmagazine.com.

Can I change links at a later date?

If at any point a submitted URL becomes invalid or broken, due to the website structure changes, the destination web page having been moved or no longer exists, notify our team and the existing link will be updated to the existing second-level domain (SLD) (i.e., name of your website) and top-level domain (TLD), for example, “.com”.

If you would like to submit a new replacement link, complete the Link Change Order form here. Each link change request incurs a $49 fee. To make substantive changes to an existing article, complete the Editorial Change Request form here. Each editorial change request incurs a $59 fee.

Submit content in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format. For standard submissions, HTML format is required.

Be sure to proofread your guest post prior to submission. We recommend using Grammarly.
