John, Meet Jane: How to Take Advantage of a Coveted Business Introduction

Once you receive a coveted introduction, make good use of these 5 tips to take advantage of a referral, stay connected and make your colleague glad he cosigned...

You need an introduction to Jane Doe. A colleague knows Jane. You ask your colleague, for an introduction to Jane and soon enough at an event, via email or scribbled on a quick and dirty post-it note … you’re in. Score!

Not so fast, quick draw.

You’re not nearly done; the work has just begun.

The Art of the Ask

Would you knowingly refer someone or something that you did not have 100 percent confidence in? Not likely.

When someone offers up their network of contacts to you it says one thing – “I think highly enough of you to invite you in … and to put my name on the line for you.” This in itself speaks volumes and other successful people realize this, because we won’t refer everyone.

Successful people love to build virtual bridges that connect others – as it increases their personal sphere of influence. That’s why you’ll get the 5 minutes that most cold calls are vying for, because you intrinsically came recommended through a trusted source.

Once you receive a coveted introduction, make good use of these 5 tips to take advantage of a referral, stay connected and make your colleague glad he cosigned for you.

1. Say Thank You.

Thank the person that referred you. You may think this goes without saying, but you’d be surprised. Take the time to make a good and lasting impression by sending a thank you card, making a quick call or typing a brief email.

2. Offer your expertise.

Ask the person that referred you how you can support them in a business capacity. You’d be amazed at the results that stem from impromptu collaboration.
