Generally, the term “flyover state” has a negative connotation.

Most of the people who use it have never seen the Midwest closer than at a cruising altitude of 30,000 feet.

The Midwest is home to hard-working, ethical, and friendly people, which is not something you can say about every area of the world. In this regard, my South Dakota-based company uses our “flyover state” status to our advantage – we receive credibility, not criticism, because we stick to our roots.

So, the next time you’re traveling between the East and the West Coasts, consider these three competitive advantages of doing business in the Midwest.

1. Advantages for Employees

Sioux Falls has been ranked one of the top cities for entrepreneurs in America, and there are several factors to explain why. Low taxes, a low cost of living, low traffic density, and low crime rates lead to very low stress and a great environment in which to raise a family.

What does this mean for a small business owner?

Employees who are happy with their environments will want to stay that way, especially those with families. They’ll buy an affordable house, find a good school for their kids, and work loyally in order to maintain status quo.

Stable employees lead to stability in the company. Your employees’ attitudes outside the office will be reflected inside the office, and a happy team can translate to happy customers.

2. Business Upsides

You obviously need financing to start a business, which traditionally comes from banks.

South Dakota’s banking industry is awesome — in that it’s easier to get financing than it might be in a larger market on a coast. No state income tax or business tax means we keep more of what we make.

Limited legal restrictions make it easier to get a business going than, say, in New York or California, not to mention there are fewer distractions inside – and outside – the office. This kind of environment, with more freedom and independence is what enables businesses in the Midwest to thrive.
