The time has come to take action on that little voice in your head telling you that you are meant to be a business owner.
Congratulations! The decision to launch your own business as a solopreneur is the first of many steps to finding the financial freedom and purpose that you desire.
It’s no coincidence that you are reading this article because several years ago I also made the same decision. My decision sparked many years of creating and business building with some success and even some failures. But through it all, entrepreneurship has truly been a rewarding and inspiring journey.
So, I am super excited that you are about to start your journey. And if there was once piece of advice I would give to new entrepreneurs taking the plunge, it would be this:
As soon as you have made the decision to start your business, find two types of people:
People who are going through the same process as you, and
entrepreneurs who have already built a successful business.
Both of these like-minded peer groups are very important. Becoming a solopreneur can be a little bit like childbirth, it’s painful and messy.
Before you register anything, consider this
Before you even register your domain name, seek the right support. This might sound like a of strange statement, but hear me out.
The first thing many entrepreneurs do once they find their big idea or decide to start a business is to get busy building their website. The entrepreneurship space is dominated with advice from gurus and experts on how to launch a website in a practical sense, but not so much on the mindset side of things.
I completely understand that you might think getting your website and social media accounts live is a top priority. Marketing is everything, right? Well, yes — in terms of sales. But first, take a moment to reflect on this:
Why am I launching a business?
Perhaps you want to be able to work from home with your kids and spend more time with them. Maybe you have a great idea you want to give to the world. And possibly you are ready for a new challenge. It’s likely that you have multiple reasons for starting up and that’s fantastic!
But there’s one thing I know for sure! You didn’t decide to start a home business so you could spend days (or months) creating a website and marketing it. Don’g get me wrong, it’s something you have to do (unless you just want to create an expensive hobby), but it’s not the most important bit on day one.
For me, the most important bit was how I felt as I set up my business. The journey is just as important as the destination and running a business is quite a ride.
Support is more important than you may realize
Have you ever heard the saying by Jim Rohn, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”?
The principle behind this saying is the reason why finding the right support, or even a business bestie, is so important.
Imagine setting up a business in a vacuum, without any qualified influence from the outside world. There’s no one there to:
bounce ideas off of
speak to when things don’t go planned
reach out to when you feel demotivated
And most importantly, no one around to inspire you to take your business to the next level. Not only does the right peer support provide everything you need in terms of advice and motivation, but it also provides you with lots of inspiration.
It’s simply is no fun building a business by yourself.
